Broadsheet Notations: Epilogue

Tang Contemporary, Bangkok
October – November, 2009

Josef Ng, Curator

“Rather then positing a structure of influence between contemporary art and the intoxicating world of specific terrains as markers of identity and existence, the exhibition attemps to record, draw attention to, or address the phenomenon of a ubiquitous material that is slowly diminishing its statue as an everyday necessity.
Our society has become more and more E-centered. Our fingers have become more prone to the nature of typing than handwriting. Our eyes are equipped to starring more at pixels rather than feeling the tactility of fiber strands – the natural element paper is manufactured from.

The exhibited artists are representative, balanced and informative. The selected artworks are distinguished by distinctive nuances, in order to transverse personal and collective experience in the artist’s exploration of ideas, making viewers distinctly aware of the thought processes undertaken within the chosen material.
There are imageries as drawn out by the inner self, the cosmic life of the body, the spiritual qualities of letters and words. There are artworks that revolve around the notion of temporary, aspect that simply mean to establish a relationship between material and image, and paradigms to indicate coincidence and co-existence between expressions.”

Artist statement

“Still on my mind, the newspaper I read on this piece, “The Business Time”. Friday, May 15th, 2009 at Singapore. There was an article about an art exhibition. Yes, the article wrote about my solo exhibition, “Spacing Identities” at the NUS Museum, Singapore. In the art world, museum has an essential part as an institution that become the main starting point of the world fine art growth/improvement, especially the museum in Europe and the US.

Having an exhibition at a museum is a self-proofing for the artist’s career in the middle of the art world. Becoming an artist in the third world country, I keep questioning and criticizing the credibility and existency of museum as the art growth parameter. I believe that the growth of art not only happened in the US or Europe, but also in Indonesia. Then I wonder… Where am I standing at the art world? Asking my identity… Who am I?”

Spacing Identities

NUS Museum, Singapore, May 10-31, 2009

Remembrance, Now (excerpt)
Shabbir Hussain Mustafa

“J. Ariadhitya Pramuhendra’s Spacing Identities draws upon family portraits from the artist’s past in ilustrating the intensely problematic yet stimulating exercise of aestheticizing fragments of everyday life in exposing the eclectic, the fragmented, and the relational concerns of identity. Engaging with specific moments in the artist’s life, the works accentuate, perhaps even fixate on exposing the constructedness of our identities ehich have come to be assumed as natural and given. Amidst the bizarre and the banality represented by family portraiture, it is assumed that there is no need to present a story nor any great proposition, but a discursive plunge, a powerful reconstitution in the present of that position where identity may be expressed.

Therefore, Spacing Identities is not entirely about making sense of the people in the aged family photographs or portraits but using such photographs from the artist’s past as starting points for an investigation of the “image” itself; as productive acts of remembering knowledge of the past, now. …”
