***Members of the press are cordially invited to the exhibition opening at Valentine Willie Fine Art
on Wednesday, 9th April at 8pm ***

3 Young Contemporaries is VWFA’s annual signature platform created to promote the works of emerging artists from the Southeast Asian region to a wider audience. Over the years, the show has proven itself to be a prominent launch-pad for the careers of many successful artists in the region.

This year’s show will reprise our tried and true formula of seeking out new artistic strategies, encouraging creative experimentation and highlighting the many ways in which young artists are shaping responses to contemporary experience. The 3 Young Contemporaries for 2008 are Ariadhitya Pramuhendra (Bandung, Indonesia), Patricia Eustaquio (Manila, the Philippines) and Tawan Wattuya (Bangkok, Thailand).

Bandung New Emergence Volume II

Inventing, Exploring, Expanding

The main curatorial purpose of this exhibition is to represent a domain of praxis called ‘Bandung contemporary art’ through selection of artworks and figures of young emerging artists. Intended as a biannual exhibition, Bandung New Emergence aims at presenting the rich potentials of artistic practice that is borne out of myriads of specific situations in Bandung within certain period of time. This exhibition truly believes that an artwork will always resonate an echo of different situations—social, politics, economics—

in which it lives.

This exhibition consciously avoids inaccurate and narrow stereotypes of Bandung contemporary art by presenting a wider range of medium exploration. Some of the artists even present their experiment using new medium they have never used before. Some of them work on site-specific works in Selasar Sunaryo Art Space areas. Bandung New Emergence Volume II wishes to show works of young artists who free themselves from the ‘comfort-zone’. Personal fantasy, interpretation of history, socio-cultural concerns, architectural and spatial exploration, and symbolic narration—to identify a few—

are just some of the themes mostly explored by the artists in this show. All the works presented here are made specially for the exhibition. This time, the exhibition mainly more functions as an inventive mapping, rather than merely a survey. In each of its conduct, Bandung New Emergence hopes to guide to a further reading on Bandung art in the future.
